Safe Handling

Handling Dry Ice Safely

Dry ice is 109.3°F below zero and turns into carbon dioxide gas as it warms.
Four habits keep everyone safe.

Wear Gloves

Use insulated gloves or tongs. Bare skin can freeze on contact.

Keep Air Moving

Use it in open, ventilated spaces. The gas builds up in closed rooms and cars.

Never Seal It In

Skip airtight containers. Pressure builds as the dry ice turns to gas.

Keep It Out of Reach

Store it away from kids and pets, and never eat or swallow it.
Uses

What Dry Ice Is Used For

Shippers, kitchens, and venues all use dry ice for the same reason.
It stays colder, longer, with nothing to drain.

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, frozen to 109.3°F below zero. It sublimates directly from solid to gas, leaving no liquid behind. Regular ice melts into water. Dry ice runs colder, lasts longer in a sealed cooler, and is the right choice when meltwater would damage what you are cooling.

Cuesta Springs Ice Company carries dry ice at two locations. Our San Luis Obispo plant at 130 High St serves the Central Coast, and our Spokane plant at 1327 N Oak St serves the Inland Northwest. Both offer pickup during plant hours, and delivery is available for businesses in each region. Delivery fees may apply outside city limits. Calling ahead is recommended to confirm availability.

Dry ice lasts longer the less warm air reaches it. Packed under bagged ice in a closed cooler, it keeps the cooler cold for 3 to 4 days. In open air it turns to gas much faster, so keep it insulated until you need it.

Yes, with ventilation. Keep a window cracked on the drive and move the dry ice out of the vehicle as soon as you arrive. Never leave dry ice in a closed car. Always handle with gloves and use a cooler or insulated box that is not airtight.
